Most people probably don’t know that today is GIS Day!
That’s great – but why should the average person care, and what is GIS anyway?!
A geographic information system (GIS) is a tool for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. It uses many types of data organized into layers and is applied to maps and 3D scenes.
Sounds complicated, right? Why would anyone be interested in using this tool unless it’s their job?

Zekiah Technologies, Inc. is pleased to welcome Kevin Manion to our Geospatial Engineering team! Mr. Manion is a native Marylander, growing up in the Annapolis area and attending college at the University of Maryland, College Park. After graduating with a degree in Geographical Sciences, his professional interests turned to GIS and front-end development and he states “I am looking forward to supporting Zekiah in those areas.”
When Mr. Manion is away from his computer keyboard, he likes to be in front of a piano keyboard! He’s been performing as part of an ensemble in the Washington, DC area for nearly a decade on piano and bassoon. He also enjoys board games on the weekends. Some of his favorites include Agricola and Colt Express.
When Mr. Manion joined Zekiah earlier this month he said “I am excited to join the Zekiah team and continue to learn and grow in their supportive environment.” Eric Mahaffey, Mr. Manion’s supervisor, shared a similar sentiment stating “I’m excited to bring Kevin on board to support the MADSS program. He brings a solid background in geospatial analysis coupled with a strong drive to gain more experience as a geospatial developer. I’m excited to see what he can do as he digs into the project.” We’re happy to continue to find strong, local talent to support our clients and looking forward to the successes we’ll achieve together. Welcome aboard Kevin!

NBID is a web based application that provides operational integration of border security in the Detroit Area of Operations.
Managing a team of Geospatial Analysts, and all their ongoing projects, requires a decent bit of effort for the Project Manager on one of our current contracts. At the onset, the PM would ask each GA what they were working on, obtain it verbally or via email, and manually enter the information into an excel spreadsheet. He would then discuss the spreadsheet with the client each week, noting any task updates or closures. The importance of the spreadsheet and the weekly client meetings cannot be understated; however, I believed that the amount of labor associated with tracking tasks could be greatly reduced.Read More »
