The Laser Weapons System (LaWS)

— LaWS is a directed energy weapon whose intended use is ship defense against drones or small-boat attackers.  It utilizes a solid-state infrared beam which can be tuned to high output to destroy the target or low output to warn or cripple the sensors of the target.

Highlights

  • We created software to move from a system requiring multiple operators to requiring only a single operator.
  • LaWS has the lowest cost per round of any weapon system in the fleet and no real ‘travel time’ to target.
  • The current phase is the Quick Reaction Capability (QRC) which is focused on developing the tactical console that integrates and controls the multiple components supporting LaWS.
  • QRC provides the operator with the ability to track and designate targets, monitor the health of all systems, determine safety conditions, and assign firing orders.
  • QRC integrates video feeds, radars, data recorders, navigation systems, and other mission critical systems in real time with the goal of enabling a single shipboard personnel with a single console to manage LaWS.
